BRANDS THAT ROCK

Branding is a bit Rock and Roll

There is a reason so many of the world's most iconic brands feel less like corporations and more like bands.

People don't follow bands because they're technically competent. They follow them because they believe in what they stand for. They connect with the attitude, the personality, the story, and the feeling.

Branding works exactly the same way.

At its best, branding isn't a logo, a colour palette, or a collection of social media templates. It's a way of expressing who you are, what you believe, and why people should care. That's where the rock and roll comes in.

Great Brands Have a Point of View

The bands that change culture rarely play it safe.

They challenge expectations. They stand for something. They create a distinct identity that people can recognise instantly. The strongest brands do the same. They know who they are. They know who they are for. And they're willing to make choices that separate them from the crowd.

Trying to appeal to everyone usually results in appealing to no one.

Personality Beats Perfection

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is trying to look "professional" at the expense of looking human.

Rock stars aren't remembered because they're perfect. They're remembered because they're interesting. Because they have character. Because they're unmistakable.

Brands need that same energy.

Not chaos for the sake of chaos. Not being different simply to attract attention. But having enough personality that people can recognise you without seeing your logo.

Fans Are Better Than Customers

The goal of branding has never been awareness alone.

The goal is connection. The best brands create communities, not audiences. They attract people who genuinely identify with what they stand for. That's exactly what great musicians do.

Nobody buys a concert ticket because a band has a well-organised spreadsheet. They buy it because they care. Brands grow in much the same way.

The Danger of Looking Like Everyone Else

Today, businesses have access to more tools than ever before.

AI can write copy.

Templates can build websites.

Design platforms can create logos in minutes.

That's fantastic for accessibility.

But it also means we're surrounded by brands that look, sound, and feel remarkably similar. When everyone is using the same tools, differentiation becomes even more valuable.

The brands that stand out are the ones willing to inject personality, perspective, creativity, and originality into what they do.

The brands willing to turn the volume up a little.

Its dangerous for brands to look like everyone else.

A Little Rock and Roll Goes a Long Way

You don't need to be controversial.

You don't need to be loud.

You don't need flames, guitars, or skulls.

But you do need a point of view.

You need a story worth telling.

You need a personality people can connect with.

And you need the confidence to sound like yourself instead of everyone else.

Because great branding has never been about fitting in.

It's about being impossible to confuse with anyone else.

And that's always been a little bit rock and roll.
